About Us
The premise behind starting the homestead was to simplify and secure our life in our very own small yard. Already equipped with gardening knowledge, herbs and preservation. Shannon brought many facets of change to our little gray homestead. Literally, when we arrived here it was covered in concrete, the only birds we ever seen were starlings. The bugs that frequented the yard were flies and wasps. We are approaching our 12th anniversary here and now we are surrounded by green and abundant life. We now have songbirds, owls, hawks and bugs abound. Last year we were overwhelmed with pollinators in many forms. We even seen a snake last year that passed through. We are so proud of our accomplishments. Starting the homestead was actually an easy process. We decided that with the way folks were so interested in living the homestead lifestyle, we were at an advantage to teach what we already knew to others. So they, the people in our community and abroad could learn from us and carry it forward to their families and others so that this way of life isn't lost forever.
Anthony (The Hubs) as he is usually referred, brought many skills as well. A millwright by trade, he has worked in construction, plumbing, electrical, metal fabrication, and much more. He is an avid wood worker in which he builds American Indian style wood and river cane flutes, drums and rattles. So, "The Hubs" is the builder and master mind behind all things wooden here at the homestead. He is self proclaimed Pepper Head. He loves to grow new peppers and hot ones at that. He is very proud of all the veg that we have produced here on the stead.
You might be surprised to know that our tiny homestead growing space is a scant 1,875 square feet. We have grown at an exponential rate in our two years that we have been developing our niche. We started out with straw bale gardening on our little concrete pad out back the first year. 2013 we saw the addition of 9 large growing beds and a poly tunnel. 2014 we will see the addition of 16 more large raised beds. We have also built two chicken coops. One houses our beautiful girls who provide us with eggs daily. Our front yard will be added to the growing space. We have many plans to add beautiful components to our yard. My (Shannon) vision is to eventually get our yard converted to become unrecognizable from its previous incarnation. The idea is for visitors to view this urban setting in awe of what is possible in the city. I want people to know how easy it is to be secure in food production, sustainability and self-sufficiency in an urban setting.
