2021 Intern Opportunities
Our application process for Intern is now OPEN. We will being processing applications beginning January 1, 2019. We've had great success working with Interns in the past at the homestead and are hoping this year proves to be just as good. We will be looking for 1 intern for the Spring, Summer and Fall seasons. Internship Information
Southern Indiana Homesteaders Association is offering an Internship program for 2021 with sessions from spring to fall, or an option to sign up for the entire planting season. Each session is centered around organic gardening, farming in small spaces, urban foraging, herbs, harvesting, many preserving techniques, composting, raising small scale livestock, greenhouse management, water catchment management, and conservation.
During the Intern program you the intern will be provided produce, foraged goods, and herbs from the homestead. The food supplied is predominately vegetarian; however, some eggs or meat could be supplied from time to time from homestead animals as it is available.
The Intern program is completely free; however, the most qualified will be chosen for the positions. All interns will receive a certificate upon completion.

Dates
- Spring: March 16 to May 31
- Summer: June 1 to August 16
- Fall: August 17 to November 8
- Full Season: March 9 to November 8
The Intern Program includes
- Garden Design - planning, design for placement, companion planting.
- Growing Process - starting seeds, transplanting, how to extend your growing season, how to prep the soil, tending to your plants, how and when to harvest, and if available to attend, how to set up at Farmers Markets, preparation and sales. Pest and weed management, how to treat common plant diseases, mulching.
- Permaculture
- Holistic Gardening
- Sustainability and Self-Reliance - interns will have the opportunity to learn how to make cheese, yogurt, and bread in our cob oven. Cooking in the outdoor kitchen is one aspect of this program. There are many opportunities for growth in sustainable and self-reliant living, which depend on season and student interest. They include: off-the-grid living in an urban environment, how to build and use a solar oven, drying herbs and produce in a solar dehydrator that you will also learn how to build, herbal medicine preparation, food preservation/fermentation (canning, freezing, kimchi, sauerkraut, kombucha), beer/wine/mead making, basic carpentry, trading, bartering and much more .
- Small Scale Livestock - interns will learn how to care for, provide their own health care (holistically and conventionally). How to butcher (if they choose) and preserving methods.
